The USAT Liberty was a USA army cargo ship that was successfully torpedoed by an Imperial Japanese navy submarine during the Second World War (1939-1945). As a result the USAT Liberty was beached on the shores of Tulamben Bali in January 1942. However, when the volcano known on Bali as Gunung Agung erupted in 1963, the volcanic eruption moved the crippled USAT Liberty off the beach and sink into the shallow waters where it lays today.
